Common Fridge Repairs for a Fridge That Is Not Cooling Properly

Your refrigerator may not cool properly for a number of reasons. First thing that you need to determine is what exactly is wrong with the fridge. There are basic diagnostic procedures that will help you determine what can be a problem and then fix the issue before you call technician.

Check the refrigerator’s power

First thing that you need to check if the refrigerator have power. The easiest way is to see if the light is turning on. You can also put your hand on the grill on the back of the refrigerator to feel it’s warm. If the light is turning on and the grill is warm you don’t have power issue. But if you determine power is off, there are steps that you need to go through:

  • First check if the power cord has been plugged in
  • Check the socket if it is working as it should. You can test socket with multi-meter or a tester. You can also try to plugin some other device into the socket. If the socket is not working then that is the issue, if it is working you need to go to the next step
  • Some models of refrigerators has power switch. Check to see if your refrigerator has a power switch and if it has check is it turned on

The refrigerator doors needs to be closed

One of the obviously thing is to make sure that the refrigerator doors are closed. Check also is it refrigerator in flat surface, so the doors can be closed properly. Check if there is something in the unit that prevents doors to be closed. If the doors are closed and the refrigerator isn’t cooling this can lead to the gas leaking and it will require extensive fridge repairs.

Defrost the refrigerator

If you open a fridge and you see ice is accumulating inside, then defrost it. Accumulated ice inside the fridge can be hindering its performance. Turn off the fridge and keep it like that until the ice melts. Clean the fridge and then turn it on.

Hear if the fan in the fridge is working

At the bottom of the fridge there should be a 2 fans. Put your ears at the bottom of the fridge to check if the fans are working. If the fans are not working or one of them is not working then you should check if something is blocking a fan. If not is blocking the fans you will need to call fridge repairs specialist.
